Woven Across Time:
The History of Rio Grande Weavings in Colorado

December 15, 2012

Katie Gardner will provide an overview of the fascinating history of Rio Grande Weaving found throughout the Southwest and Colorado through a slide lecture and the presentation of numerous samples. Utilizing colorful contemporary and historic black and white illustrations, Katie will explain how Hispanic Weaving differs from Pueblo and Navajo Weaving. She will present examples of Hispanic-made pieces including early Mexican products, beautiful nineteenth century Rio Grande blankets, and modern Chimayo weaving. Primarily, her focus will be on a Colorado collection, but she will also showcase several pieces from New Mexico.

Katie will bring many books, weaving tools, and blanket samples in the style of Rio Grande Weaving for us to enjoy. Join us for this interesting and informative piece of Colorado History!

Following Katie’s talk, we will have our annual holiday potluck–bring a dish to share, along with a list of its ingredients. Everything else is provided!
