The Arts District program this week (7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 11) on RMPBS and KTSC features SPUN at the Art Museum.
The Denver Art Museum takes a wide-ranging look at textiles at this campus-wide exhibition titled Spun: Adventures in Textiles. From contemporary artists to the American West, pre-Columbian weavings to Navajo design, the exhibition offers something for everyone’s interest; Internationally recognized violinist Elmar Oliveira is constantly expanding his repertoire, playing contemporary pieces and rarely-heard works of the past. He is the only American to have won the prestigious Russian International Tchaikovsky Competition; Writer and director Francois Girard introduces us to “Zarkana,” the new show by Cirque du Soleil. The acrobatic rock experience tells the story of Zark, a ringmaster ofa strange and wonderful circus; Photographer Abrahán Garza was one of the first to pioneer the cell phone photography movement. His interest in photography has led him to roam the streets of Houston, finding locations depicted in old postcards or photographs, and creating new images that blend the old and the new.
