Navajo Textile Lecture October 22

Come Celebrate Navajo Textiles and All Our Work!

A number of years ago, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science received an IMLS Conservation grant to re-house the flat textiles in the Anthropology Collection, many of which were Navajo. The call went out for help, and thanks to Peggy Whitehead, many of us in the weaving guilds along the Front Range were able to participant, and see first hand, these incredible textiles. Now, we can see them again, and share our joy with all of you and the rest of the world, because many of the incredible Navajo textiles we worked on have finally been published, and their publication is being celebrated Sunday evening, Oct 22, in the Ricketson Auditorium, at DMNS (see the details below). Hope to see you all there. — Dale Zitek

Navajo Textiles
The Crane Collection at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science

by Laurie D Webster, Lousie I. Stiver, D.Y. Begay, & Lynda Teller Pete, with an introduction by Ann Lane Hedlund
Celebrate the publication of Navajo Textiles, a beautiful new volume highlighting 57 incredible Navajo weavings in the Crane American Indian Collection. Scholars, curators, and Navajo weavers lent their insights into the rich history and artistry of the artifacts, accompanied by beautiful photographs.

Laurie Webster, a preeminent textiles scholar and lead author, will share how this fine collection arrived at the Museum, how the collaboration brought forth new understandings and relationships, and why she describes the weavings as the “best Navajo textile collection you’ve never heard of.”

A selection of textiles will be displayed. A book sale and signing will follow the lecture.
