Holiday Sale at the Botanic Garden

Posted by on Oct 22, 2012 in Outreach

The guild has been offered the incredible opportunity to establish a relationship with the Denver Botanic Gardens.

We have been invited to demonstrate spinning and weaving during the Gardens’ annual Holiday Sale on Nov. 9 & 10. The Urban Farm will also have sheep and alpacas at the demo.

In addition, Chuck McGlothlin, the Garden’s Gift Shop manager, has expressed an interest in purchasing handcrafted items from Guild members to sell in the gift shop.

Chuck will be looking for handcrafted items he thinks will be attractive to gift shop customers for the winter season. He will purchase items at “wholesale” which means that he will most likely double the price of the work he purchases. This is standard procedure in the retail business world. Guild members interested in selling to the gift shop should meet at the Botanic Gardens gift shop on Sunday, October 28th at 2pm.

Buying handcrafted goods from local artisans for the gift shop is a new venture for Chuck. It would be helpful if members present consistent prices for similar types of items you wish to sell.

There may be other ways we can be involved in events at the Gardens in the future. It’s important that we, as representatives of our Guild, present ourselves as professional artisans offering high quality goods at fair market prices.

This opportunity to be a part of the Holiday Sale at the Gardens will, hopefully, be the start of a long and productive relationship with the Botanic Gardens.

Denver Art Museum Brain Storming Session

Posted by on Oct 21, 2012 in Outreach

On Nov. 9th the Denver Art Museum is having an Untitled community brainstorming session to plan for our 2013 season. In the summer of 2013, the art museum will be focusing its exhibitions and programs on the field of textiles and we are looking to find community partners. We hope you can make it to this event, and if you know of other creatives who should come, please invite them!

Meet Here: An Evening of Untitled Idea Brewing and Creative Criss-Cross
Friday, November 9th, 6-8 pm
Ponti Hall, Level 1, North Building

Use the DAM collections as your inspiration, the program as your platform – we’re looking for local creatives to bring the ideas and the know-how to the 2013 season of Untitled. Every month, Untitled is produced with community partners from all disciplines, including: chefs and crafters, artists and architects, writers and musicians.

Come to our open-house style event to hear about the 2013 themes and brainstorm ways we can collaborate. Meet other creatives and share your wild ideas. Hear about MakeARTtalk, our monthly series that invites local creatives to find inspiration in the DAM collections and make a new work to share with Untitled visitors. Jeanne Connolly, from Denver Design Incubator, will share her experience as one of the MakeARTtalk creatives from Untitled #45 (Haute).

We’ll also be doing some speed brainstorming sessions, based on the DAM’s upcoming exhibition schedule and the Untitled themes. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there will be snacks.

We hope you can make it – please RSVP to Jaime: jkopke@denverartmuseum.org

October Program: Jay Rich

Posted by on Oct 5, 2012 in Programs

Program title: SHIBORI RESISTS FOR HANDWEAVERS OR KNITTERS

Description: Jay will review his transition from hand knitter to shibori dyer. Tie dye my knitting–why not! A lot of sampling was necessary to perfect resists on loose, stretchy knits that didn’t behavior like tightly woven cottons or silks more typically used for shibori. His knowledge of complex resists then lead to refinement of resist dyeing on wovens, texturing silk organzas with scouring and further dye work to unlock the secrets of natural dyes. His latest work has involved use of pairs of mirror image carved boards for clamp resist dyeing. Jay will bring his samples and parts of his textile collection for study and discussion.
